My practical recommendations

If you’re a home user

Use Microsoft Defender if you want free, built-in protection and good baseline security. If you want a paid suite, shortlist Bitdefender, ESET, or Norton 360. Keep Malwarebytes around if you like a second-opinion scanner. If you’re a small business

The best “boring but effective” stack is usually:

• Microsoft 365 Business Premium / E5 Security for identity, email security, device management, Defender, and baseline compliance.
• Defender for Endpoint or CrowdStrike Falcon for endpoint security.
• Huntress, Blackpoint, Arctic Wolf, Sophos MDR, Rapid7 MDR, or CrowdStrike Falcon Complete if you need humans monitoring alerts.
• Fortinet FortiGate or Meraki for firewall/networking, depending on whether you want deeper security features or simpler management.

If you’re a mid-market company

Shortlist:

• CrowdStrike Falcon or Microsoft Defender for Endpoint for endpoint/XDR.
• Fortinet FortiGate or Palo Alto NGFW for network security.
• Microsoft Sentinel, Splunk, Elastic, or Rapid7 InsightIDR for SIEM.
• Okta or Microsoft Entra ID for SSO/MFA.
• Arctic Wolf, Sophos MDR, CrowdStrike Falcon Complete, Rapid7 MDR, Red Canary, or Expel if you don’t have a mature SOC.

If you’re a large enterprise

I’d normally evaluate three platform paths:

1. Microsoft-first: Microsoft Defender XDR, Sentinel, Entra ID, Purview, Defender for Cloud. Best if you are already heavily Microsoft 365/Azure.
2. Palo Alto-first: NGFW/Strata, Prisma SASE, Cortex XDR/XSIAM, Prisma/Cortex Cloud, CyberArk identity. Best if you want platform consolidation across network, SOC, cloud, and identity; Palo Alto completed its CyberArk acquisition in 2026. (investors.paloaltonetworks.com)

If I had to name the most credible, widely used cybersecurity brands to know:

1. Microsoft Security — best default for Microsoft-heavy organizations.
2. CrowdStrike — top-tier endpoint/XDR/MDR brand.
3. Palo Alto Networks — premium enterprise platform: firewall, SASE, cloud, SOC, identity.
4. Fortinet — huge installed base, especially firewalls and secure networking.
5. Zscaler — major SSE / zero-trust access provider.
6. Netskope — strong SASE/SSE and cloud access security.
7. SentinelOne — strong endpoint/XDR alternative to CrowdStrike/Microsoft.
8. Okta — widely used independent identity/access management.
9. Wiz / Google Cloud — major cloud-security/CNAPP platform.
10. Splunk — still a core SIEM/security analytics name, especially in large enterprises.

One U.S.-specific caution

I would not recommend Kaspersky for U.S. users or U.S. businesses, regardless of technical test results, because the U.S. Department of Commerce prohibited Kaspersky from providing antivirus/cybersecurity products or services in the U.S. or to U.S. persons, with update restrictions taking effect in 2024.
