As of Sept. 1, 2026, there isn’t one “best cybersecurity company” for everyone. The brands people actually use tend to cluster by category: Microsoft, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, Zscaler, Netskope, Okta, Cisco Duo, Splunk, Wiz/Google, SentinelOne, Sophos, Arctic Wolf, Rapid7, Bitdefender, ESET, Norton, Malwarebytes.
Fast shortlist: top brands/products by use case
| Need | Best brands/products to shortlist | Why people pick them |
|---|---|---|
| All-around enterprise security platform | Microsoft Security, Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, Cisco, Fortinet | Broad platforms, lots of integrations, strong enterprise adoption. Microsoft is especially attractive if you already pay for Microsoft 365/Azure; Palo Alto is strong for network + cloud + SOC platform consolidation. |
| Endpoint protection / EDR / XDR | CrowdStrike Falcon, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, SentinelOne Singularity, Palo Alto Cortex XDR, Sophos Intercept X | CrowdStrike, Microsoft, SentinelOne, and Palo Alto are all prominent in the 2026 endpoint-protection analyst landscape; CrowdStrike and Microsoft also both state they were named Leaders in Gartner’s 2026 endpoint Magic Quadrant. (gartner.com) |
| Firewalls / network security | Palo Alto Networks NGFW, Fortinet FortiGate, Check Point Quantum, Cisco Secure Firewall / Meraki | Fortinet says more than 1,000,000 customers use its solutions, and FortiGate is one of the most common real-world firewall choices; Palo Alto is often the premium enterprise pick, while Check Point is strong in policy management and Cisco fits Cisco-heavy shops. (fortinet.com) |
| SASE / SSE / Zero Trust access | Zscaler, Netskope, Palo Alto Prisma SASE, Cato Networks, Cloudflare One, Cisco | Zscaler, Netskope, Palo Alto, and Cato are repeatedly positioned among the most visible SASE/SSE leaders; Zscaler says its platform is used by over 40% of Global 2000 customers. (ir.zscaler.com) |
| SIEM / security operations | Microsoft Sentinel, Splunk Enterprise Security, Google SecOps, Elastic Security, CrowdStrike Falcon Next-Gen SIEM, IBM QRadar | Microsoft, Splunk, Google, and Elastic are major SIEM shortlists; Microsoft says Sentinel was named a Leader in the 2025 Gartner SIEM Magic Quadrant, and Gartner’s SIEM market page lists many of these as prominent evaluated products. (microsoft.com) |
| Cloud security / CNAPP | Wiz / Google Cloud, Palo Alto Prisma Cloud / Cortex Cloud, Orca Security, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, CrowdStrike Falcon Cloud Security, Lacework/Fortinet | Wiz is one of the most widely discussed cloud-security platforms and says it is used by 65% of the Fortune 100; Google completed its acquisition of Wiz in March 2026. (wiz.io) |
| Identity, MFA, privileged access | Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, Cisco Duo, CyberArk / Palo Alto, Ping Identity | Okta, Microsoft, CyberArk, and Ping appear in Gartner’s 2025 Access Management landscape; Cisco Duo was recognized as a 2026 Gartner Peer Insights Customers’ Choice for user authentication/access management, and Palo Alto completed its CyberArk acquisition in 2026. (gartner.com) |
| Managed detection & response — MDR | CrowdStrike Falcon Complete, Arctic Wolf, Sophos MDR, Rapid7 MDR, Red Canary, Expel, Huntress | Good if you don’t have a 24/7 SOC. Gartner defines MDR as remotely delivered SOC functions, and its 2026 peer-review market page highlights Sophos, Arctic Wolf, CrowdStrike, and Rapid7 among common MDR choices. (gartner.com) |
| Home / individual antivirus | Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, ESET, Norton 360, Malwarebytes | AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 test gave top or near-top scores to Bitdefender, Norton, and Microsoft Defender; AV-Comparatives’ 2026 survey found ESET, Bitdefender, Microsoft Defender, Avast, Norton, McAfee, and Malwarebytes among commonly used anti-malware brands. (av-test.org) |
My practical recommendations
If you’re a home user
Use Microsoft Defender if you want free, built-in protection and good baseline security. If you want a paid suite, shortlist Bitdefender, ESET, or Norton 360. Keep Malwarebytes around if you like a second-opinion scanner. AV-TEST’s 2026 Windows results show Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, and Norton performing strongly, and AV-Comparatives’ survey shows these are among the products people actually use. (av-test.org)
If you’re a small business
The best “boring but effective” stack is usually:
- Microsoft 365 Business Premium / E5 Security for identity, email security, device management, Defender, and baseline compliance.
- Defender for Endpoint or CrowdStrike Falcon for endpoint security.
- Huntress, Blackpoint, Arctic Wolf, Sophos MDR, Rapid7 MDR, or CrowdStrike Falcon Complete if you need humans monitoring alerts.
- Fortinet FortiGate or Meraki for firewall/networking, depending on whether you want deeper security features or simpler management.
If you’re a mid-market company
Shortlist:
- CrowdStrike Falcon or Microsoft Defender for Endpoint for endpoint/XDR.
- Fortinet FortiGate or Palo Alto NGFW for network security.
- Microsoft Sentinel, Splunk, Elastic, or Rapid7 InsightIDR for SIEM.
- Okta or Microsoft Entra ID for SSO/MFA.
- Arctic Wolf, Sophos MDR, CrowdStrike Falcon Complete, Rapid7 MDR, Red Canary, or Expel if you don’t have a mature SOC.
If you’re a large enterprise
I’d normally evaluate three platform paths:
- Microsoft-first: Microsoft Defender XDR, Sentinel, Entra ID, Purview, Defender for Cloud. Best if you are already heavily Microsoft 365/Azure.
- Palo Alto-first: NGFW/Strata, Prisma SASE, Cortex XDR/XSIAM, Prisma/Cortex Cloud, CyberArk identity. Best if you want platform consolidation across network, SOC, cloud, and identity; Palo Alto completed its CyberArk acquisition in 2026. (investors.paloaltonetworks.com)
- Best-of-breed: CrowdStrike for endpoint, Zscaler/Netskope for SSE, Wiz/Google for cloud, Okta for identity, Splunk or Sentinel for SIEM, Fortinet/Palo Alto for firewall.
My “top 10” brand list overall
If I had to name the most credible, widely used cybersecurity brands to know:
- Microsoft Security — best default for Microsoft-heavy organizations.
- CrowdStrike — top-tier endpoint/XDR/MDR brand.
- Palo Alto Networks — premium enterprise platform: firewall, SASE, cloud, SOC, identity.
- Fortinet — huge installed base, especially firewalls and secure networking.
- Zscaler — major SSE / zero-trust access provider.
- Netskope — strong SASE/SSE and cloud access security.
- SentinelOne — strong endpoint/XDR alternative to CrowdStrike/Microsoft.
- Okta — widely used independent identity/access management.
- Wiz / Google Cloud — major cloud-security/CNAPP platform.
- Splunk — still a core SIEM/security analytics name, especially in large enterprises.
One U.S.-specific caution
I would not recommend Kaspersky for U.S. users or U.S. businesses, regardless of technical test results, because the U.S. Department of Commerce prohibited Kaspersky from providing antivirus/cybersecurity products or services in the U.S. or to U.S. persons, with update restrictions taking effect in 2024. Cybersecurity is not one-size-fits-all—the best solution is the one that fits your specific risk, budget, and environment.
How this is measured
McAfee’s AI Recommendation Score (12/100) reflects how widely and often the 9 AI models recommend it for cyber security companies: share of voice, mention rate and how early the AI models name it. Cited sources are published as receipts, never as a score input. Every monthly refresh asks each AI model the same buyer question once, and the exact run count behind every edition is published in its JSON record. Placement is determined solely by AI recommendation data; it reflects what AI recommends and is not an endorsement by CiteHawk. Read the full methodology →
