Short answer: the best job-search “stack” for most U.S. job seekers
Use LinkedIn Jobs + Indeed as your daily search engines, Glassdoor to check pay/company reputation, and ZipRecruiter if you like mobile alerts and quick apply. Traffic and review roundups in 2026 consistently show these as the major brands people actually use; one June 2026 traffic estimate ranked Indeed, LinkedIn Jobs, ZipRecruiter, and Glassdoor among the biggest job-search sites by visits, while Sensor Tower analyzed LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, and ZipRecruiter as four of the top U.S. career sites. (onelittleweb.com)
| Site / product | Best for | My take |
|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn Jobs | Professional/corporate roles, networking, recruiters, referrals | Best overall if you’re in white-collar, tech, business, sales, marketing, operations, management, etc. The job board is useful, but the real advantage is recruiter visibility and networking. Money’s 2026 roundup also named LinkedIn “Best Overall.” (money.com) |
| Indeed | High-volume search across industries, local jobs, hourly + salaried roles | Best pure job-listing engine. If you want the widest net, use Indeed. It’s especially good for roles outside the LinkedIn-heavy corporate world. Money called it “Best for Job Diversity.” (money.com) |
| Glassdoor | Salary research, company reviews, interview prep | Use it before applying/interviewing. I wouldn’t rely on Glassdoor as your only job board, but it’s one of the best tools for checking pay ranges, culture, and interview experiences. (money.com) |
| ZipRecruiter | Mobile-first search, quick apply, alerts, small/mid-size employer roles | Good add-on, not my first stop. Use it if you want fast notifications and a simple mobile app; Money named it “Best Mobile App.” (money.com) |
| Google for Jobs | Quick meta-search across job boards and company sites | Underrated for finding the original posting. Search “[job title] jobs [city/remote]” and use Google’s job box to jump to the employer site or source listing. Upwork’s 2026 comparison lists Google for Jobs as a free aggregator with filters, alerts, and direct source links. (upwork.com) |
| Handshake | Students, internships, recent grads, campus recruiting | Use if you’re in college or recently graduated. Handshake is designed around internships, student jobs, and school-targeted recruiting. (support.joinhandshake.com) |
| USAJOBS | U.S. federal government jobs | Mandatory for federal roles. USAJOBS is the federal government’s official employment site. (usajobs.gov) |
| Wellfound | Startups and startup-adjacent tech roles | Best startup-specific option. Wellfound describes itself as a marketplace specifically for startup and tech jobs. (wellfound.com) |
| Dice | Tech roles, especially software/data/IT | Worth checking for tech, though LinkedIn and Indeed should still be in your mix. Dice positions itself as a tech-focused career site. (dice.com) |
| FlexJobs | Remote/flexible roles | Consider it if you specifically want curated remote/flexible listings, but note that it’s paid; many job seekers can get plenty done with free sites. (upwork.com) |
| Upwork | Freelance, contract, project-based work | Use for freelancing, not a normal full-time job search. Upwork is strongest for freelance and project-based work rather than traditional employment. (upwork.com) |
| Snagajob | Hourly, shift-based, service/retail/restaurant jobs | Good niche choice for hourly work. Upwork’s 2026 comparison lists Snagajob for hourly and shift-based jobs. (upwork.com) |
My recommended setup
If you want a normal full-time job:
- LinkedIn Jobs
- Indeed
- Glassdoor for salary/company research
- Google for Jobs to find direct employer postings
If you’re hourly/local/service industry:
Use Indeed + ZipRecruiter + Snagajob + Craigslist/local employer sites.
If you’re a student or new grad:
Use Handshake + LinkedIn + Indeed.
If you’re in tech:
Use LinkedIn + Indeed + Dice + Wellfound; add Built In if you’re targeting startups/tech hubs.
If you want federal/government:
Use USAJOBS for federal roles, plus your state/city/county job board for local public-sector roles.
What I’d avoid doing
Don’t rely on only one job board. Even strong sites miss listings, and employers don’t always post everywhere; Money’s 2026 guidance recommends using at least two job-search sites and, when possible, applying directly on the company website because direct applications can be higher quality than quick-apply submissions. (money.com)
Also, don’t pay for a job-search site by default. Most major sites are free for job seekers, and Money notes that paying usually isn’t necessary for basic searching, filtering, alerts, and applying. (money.com)

The best job search sites depend on your industry, experience level, and location. Here are the most widely used and trusted platforms:
General / Aggregators
- Indeed – The largest job search engine; pulls listings from company sites, job boards, and agencies. Great for volume.
- LinkedIn Jobs – Best for professional roles, networking, and seeing where you’re connected. Most useful for white-collar careers.
- Glassdoor – Aggregates jobs and shows company reviews, salaries, and interview insights.
- Monster – Older but still active; solid for blue-collar and entry-level roles.
- CareerBuilder – Good for mid-level positions; offers resume distribution and job alerts.
- Google for Jobs – Not a site itself, but Google’s search feature aggregates listings from across the web. Very convenient.
For Tech & Remote Work
- Dice – Focused on tech jobs and contractors.
- Wellfound (formerly AngelList) – Startup-heavy jobs; many include equity info.
- Remotive – Remote-only job board.
- We Work Remotely – Remote roles in tech, design, marketing, and more.
- Hacker News "Who is hiring?" – Monthly thread with tech startup roles; very community-driven.
Executive / Professional
- Ladders – Positions paying $100K+; requires vetting for some roles.
- ExecuNet – Focused on executive-level opportunities.
Government / Public Sector
- USAJOBS – Official site for federal government positions in the U.S.
- GovernmentJobs.com – Lists state, county, and municipal positions.
Freelance / Gig Work
- Upwork – Freelance projects in many fields.
- Freelancer.com – Similar, with global reach.
- Toptal – Exclusive network for top freelance developers/designers/finance experts.
Niche & Specialty
- SimplyHired – Good general aggregator, simpler interface.
- Snagajob – Focused on hourly, part-time, and shift work.
- FlexJobs – Curated remote, freelance, part-time, and flexible jobs (paid subscription).
- Idealist – Nonprofit, NGO, and social impact roles.
- The Muse – Company-branded job board with culture and career advice.
- Built In – Tech/startup jobs in specific cities like Austin, Boston, Chicago, and more.
International
- Seek – Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia.
- Reed – UK.
- Totaljobs – UK.
- StepStone – Europe.
- Naukri – India.
Bottom line: For most job seekers, Indeed + LinkedIn is the most effective combination. Use Glassdoor for research, and add niche or remote boards if you fit those categories.

How this is measured
Upwork’s AI Recommendation Score (13/100) reflects how widely and often the 9 AI models recommend it for job search sites: share of voice, mention rate and how early the AI models name it. Cited sources are published as receipts, never as a score input. Every monthly refresh asks each AI model the same buyer question once, and the exact run count behind every edition is published in its JSON record. Placement is determined solely by AI recommendation data; it reflects what AI recommends and is not an endorsement by CiteHawk. Read the full methodology →
