Answer engine
Definition
An answer engine is a system that responds to a question with a composed answer rather than a list of links: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and AI-augmented search results all behave as answer engines. The answer, not the ranking, is the product.
The shift matters for brands because an answer has no page two. A results page distributes attention across many links; an answer concentrates it on the few names the engine chose to write down.
Answer engines differ in how they gather material: some browse the live web on every question, some lean on training knowledge, most blend both. That is one reason different engines give different answers to the same question, and why measuring one engine tells you little about the rest.
