Discovery prompt
Definition
A discovery prompt is a question a buyer asks when they do not yet know which brands exist, such as "best accounting software for a small business". Discovery prompts are where new customers first meet, or never meet, a brand in AI answers.
Discovery prompts are the highest-stakes category because the buyer has no prior brand in mind: the assistant’s shortlist effectively is the market. Absence from discovery answers is invisible lost demand; no analytics tool on your own site can see the customers who never arrived.
They are also the fairest fight. The assistant must choose somebody, and it chooses from the sources it trusts, which are improvable.
